1 February changes

12 month prescriptions

Patients who take regular long-term medication, and are medically stable, may be able to get prescriptions for up to 12 months.

To see if you are eligible, you will need to book an appointment with your regular prescriber. Your prescriber will review your history and decide if the extended prescription is clinically appropriate for you. There is a standard consultation fee for this appointment, even if your prescriber decides the extended prescription is not suitable for you.

Prescriptions that are extended to 12 month repeats will still need to be collected from the pharmacy every three months (six months for oral contraceptives). However, you will only need to pay the co-payment of $5-$15 per item the first time you collect your 12 month prescription.

If your prescribed medication goes out of stock or changes brand/formulation during the 12 months, you will need to request a new repeat prescription from us.

Controlled drugs, ADHD medication, medication that requires regular monitoring and medication that are only used as needed are not available for 12 month prescriptions.

ADHD Diagnosis

From 1 February General Practitioners and Nurse Practitioners (practitioners) can start medical treatment for patients 18+ who have a confirmed ADHD treatment.

If you think you have ADHD, please book an appointment with your usual practitioner; a standard consultation fee will apply to this appointment. If your practitioner thinks an ADHD diagnosis is worth exploring, they will refer you to a provider for the assessment. Our preferred provider is Te Wheke. You can also self-refer through their website. Please note that these providers will have their own separate fees for the assessment and they will advise you when you book.

If the provider confirms ADHD, you will be contacted by us to book an 'ADHD Medication Start' appointment. These appointments will vary between 15-45 minutes depending on your medical history, and may be with your regular practitioner or another practitioner experienced in starting ADHD medication. Appointment fees will apply.

Following the start of your medication, you will need to visit your regular practitioner within 2-4 weeks for a standard consultation to review your medication.
